The Malossi MHR Digitronic CDI operates – just like the original CDI – with a variable ignition timing. This means: the ignition timing (IT) is adjusted based on engine speed. Since the combustion of the mixture takes approximately the same amount of time, ignition must occur further before the top dead center (TDC) at higher engine speeds. This ensures the mixture is fully combusted shortly after passing TDC, and the resulting energy can be optimally used for the "downward movement".

Of course, this is limited: too much advance ignition would cause the engine to work against the ignition, which quickly causes thermal problems and in the worst case can mean a hole in the piston. This is exactly where Malossi comes in: with optimized ignition timings, you get noticeably more power even at low engine speeds. Additionally, the rev limiter programmed into the original CDI is deactivated – ideal as a supplement if you are running, for example, a Malossi tuning cylinder.
