The Vespa
Piaggio became world famous with its Vespa scooter model. The Piaggio Vespa was developed as a useful means of transportation, which can also be moved sometimes over bumpy roads. Nowadays, the Vespa is the most popular scooter model in Europe due to its special vespon-like shape.
It all started in 1946 with the Vespa 98. 3.2hp 98cc and a top speed of 60km/h. Then followed countless Vespa models from 50cm³ to 200cm³. With the Vespa 400, even a 4-wheeled microcar was produced in 1957.
Especially the Vespa GTS models are a real customer magnet. But also the Vespa Primavera and the Vespa Sprint are very popular, especially as a 50 cc variant, because you can legally drive in Germany with a car license. In 2018, Piaggio released the first electric Vespa. The Vespa Elettrica.
The Piaggio motor scooters have simply achieved cult status in Europe. Many Vespa drivers are organized in clubs and regulars' tables. There are even large Vespa meetings on those the Vespa drivers also "Vespisiti" called, with your scooters meet.
Vespa is an Italian attitude to life.
This attitude to life is of course also lived. Imagine a Vespa driver with a retro jet helmet on his head. In one hand an espresso in the other hand a Vespa key with a Vespa keychain.

Piaggio has optimized its vehicles to meet the needs of its customers
Piaggio has shown time and again in its more than 100-year history how to become successful as a company in the vehicle segment. Starting with a wooden warehouse for furniture production on luxurious ships, through railroad construction to aircraft construction, it went final to the production of scooters, mopeds, motorcycles and mopeds.
Whether on rails, in the air, on 2 wheels or 3 wheels. Piaggio has always managed to design revolutionary vehicles with its innovative ideas, becoming the market leader in Europe for motorized two-wheelers.
How Piaggio conquered the streets and hearts of all Europe
- 1882Cavalier Enrico Piaggio buys a plot of land in Genoa for a planned timber yard
- 1884Rinaldo Piaggio, the son of Cavalier, founds the Piaggio company. Piaggio initially produces furniture and interiors for luxury ships. Later, the business is expanded to the construction and repair of railroad cars.
- 1915As aviation becomes more and more obese, Piaggio starts building and repairing seaplanes.
- 1917Piaggio takes over a complete aircraft plant in Pisa and is able to establish itself in the aeronautical industry with the design and construction of aircraft.
- 1924Rinaldo Piaggio acquires the "Costruzione Meccaniche Nazionali" production facility in Pontedera. At first, aircraft engines are built here, later also other types of vehicles.
- 1930Piaggio always manages to assemble a team of excellent engineers and mechanics. This is how the company manages to construct one of the first helicopter prototypes in the world.
- 1944The Moto Piaggio (MP) is developed. It is the first motor scooter with a load-bearing frame. It is nicknamed "Paperino" (Italian name of Donald Duck).
- 1945Thanks to the great know-how of aeronautics, the Moto Piaggio can be greatly improved in a very short time. The prototype MP6 is created.
- 1946Production of the MP6 motor scooter starts under the name Vespa 98 (Italian for wasp). The first Vespa is thus born.
- 1948Piaggio introduces the Ape (Italian for "bee") three-wheeled van.
- 1967The moped model Ciao is introduced. This new generation of 2-stroke mopeds is particularly popular with young people. The Ciao is produced almost unchanged up to and including 2006.
- 1969Piaggio takes over the Gilera brand.
- 1975The first electric Ape is produced by Piaggio.
- 1987Piaggio takes over the Austrian moped manufacturer Puch.
- 1989With the motor scooter Sfera Piaggio creates a new generation of practical and lightweight scooters.
- 1992The company also enters the four-wheel segment with the Piaggio Porter van. But the core business is and remains scooters. With the scooter models Piaggio Hexagon, Piaggio Sfera, Piaggio Skipper and Piaggio Zip, the company consolidates its market position.
- 2004Piaggio takes over the already well-known Italian motorcycle manufacturers Aprilia and Moto Guzzi. Together with the acquisition of Derbi in 2001, Piaggio is now the market leader in scooter manufacturing in Europe.
- 2006The Piaggio MP3 introduces a completely new vehicle concept. Two tiltable wheels at the front, a conventionally driven rear wheel at the back. The three-wheeled Piaggio MP3 has a shorter braking distance and much better stability, which prevents the vehicle from tipping over on wet surfaces.
- 2014With 550,000 vehicles produced by some 7,500 employees, Piaggio generated sales of 1.2 billion euros.
- 2018With the Vespa Elettrica, Piaggio 's world-renowned cult scooter "Vespa" is relaunched as an electric scooter.
The Love for Motorized Two-Wheeled Vehicles
Piaggio recognized early on the need of Italians to be able to move quickly, cheaply and independently, even over long distances. As early as 1946, Piaggio created the Vespa 98, a legendary scooter that continues to fill Europe's streets and hearts today. Through the acquisition of legendary companies such as Gilera and Derbi, Piaggio has catapulted forward in the scooter sector technologically and qualitatively. So that today you can rightly say that Piaggio is the largest and most successful scooter manufacturer in Europe.
But also in the segment of mopeds and mopeds so the so-called light motorcycles Piaggio could make a name for itself with its moped model Ciao. The acquisition of the manufacturer Puch Mofa only strengthened Piaggio's growth in this area.
The acquisition of Italian motorcycle manufacturers Aprilia and Moto Guzzi also proved Piaggio's great love for motorized two-wheelers.
Piaggio Vespa and Ape are world famous today
Two vehicle models from Piaggio are known worldwide today. Namely, it is the scooter Vespa built in 1946 and the three-wheeled van Ape built 3 years later. These two vehicle models are still cult today. Piaggio has of course produced many more scooters and mopeds that have also achieved considerable sales figures. Models such as a Piaggio Zip scooter, a Ciao moped, a Piaggio Sfera scooter, a Liberty scooter, or the maxi scooters Piaggio Skipper, Hexagon or the three-wheeled scooter Piaggio MP3 are also an example of the diverse model range of the company.
