Converting to a more modern alternator/ignition type is a proven method for more reliable and safer operation. Touchless CDI ignitions are virtually indestructible and reliable, and the lighting output with a modern, regulator-supported on-board electrical system is many times higher, as not only is the voltage increased from 6 volts to 12 volts, but the ignition base plate can also generally produce more power.

To do this, it is necessary to adapt the wiring harness, as a modern electrical system has all of the lighting coils connected in series for maximum power output, and only one current-carrying cable remains as the output for the on-board voltage. This is then led to the voltage regulator, which limits the on-board voltage to a constant 12-13 volts. This effectively prevents the feared domino effect of the old electrical system, in which all bulbs burn out one after another after the failure of a single bulb. The current is then directed to the individual consumers after the regulator. With this technology, a very powerful alternator, such as our BGM ignition base plate, can also be used, which already guarantees high lighting output and ignition power at low speeds.

To use such an alternator in the old chassis, you therefore need a matching wiring harness. Our conversion wiring harness is exactly the right thing for this, and is also very versatile. It is based on a reduced electrical system that powers the horn/hooter, dipped beam headlights, and the tail/brake light. The installation of a flasher relay is optional, and the wiring harness is already prepared for this.
In conjunction with our BGM 12-volt voltage regulator, this creates a very modern on-board electrical system that, in addition to brilliant and powerful lighting output, also includes features such as a DC output for charging a mobile phone or, for example, a navigation device.

When using our conversion wiring harness, a battery is no longer required. Any existing 6V hooter can continue to be used, as it can easily cope with occasional 12V. Further technical information is provided in our wiring diagram.
