Description

Complete electronic ignition including flywheel and CDI
suitable for Piaggio Ciao, Si, Bravo and Boxer mopes/mopeds.

The cable lengths are identical to the factory-installed Piaggio ELO ignition.

Technical data

  • Voltage: 6 volts/12 volts

  • Output yellow: light 6 volts

  • Brown output: 6 volt brake light (if available)

  • Blue output: 12 volt indicator (if available)

Benefits of CDI ignition

  • No readjustment necessary

  • stable ignition timing at any speed

  • Permanently strong, constant ignition spark

  • no more misfires

  • Possibility to connect multiple consumers

The ignition fits all engine housings that already had an electronic ignition installed at the factory.
Can also be used on:

  • all Piaggio Elo engines

  • Polini speed engine for electronic ignitions

  • Polini Evolution engine for electronic ignitions

  • Malossi MP One for electronic ignitions

  • Pinasco powercasing for electronic ignitions

6 volts or 12 volts?
Like the factory-installed ELO ignition, the one offered here has the curious feature of a 6 volt voltage for the main lighting but 12 volt voltage for the turn signals. Piaggio has also used this technology on other vehicles (e.g. Vespa PK50S), presumably for a faster response time of the flasher relay at low speed (idle).

Voltage regulator?
The information that can be read many times over that a voltage regulator is necessary for the alternator is incorrect. It is a so-called self-regulating system. This means that the load on the consumers (lamps) provides a suitable resistance. If all consumers are connected as intended at the factory (yellow cable 6V/15W headlight bulb, 6V/4W tail light), no voltage regulator is required. However, this only applies to motors that do not rotate significantly higher than a standard motor. Tuned motors, which usually reach significantly higher final speeds, can generate a significantly higher voltage with the same load on the consumers, which can cause the bulbs to burn out.

12Volt lighting on 6Volt coils?
Basically, a coil only ever produces one output (watts), not a precisely defined voltage (volts). The voltage is always dependent on the attached load (consumer) and the induced voltage (rotational speed of the pole wheel). The load is defined by the lamps. A 12 volt bulb has a lower internal resistance than one with 6 volts. Therefore, 12 volt bulbs can also be easily operated on a system that is designed for 6 volts. However, there is an even faster risk of an overvoltage here, which would lead to the failure of the lamps. The brightness depends on the wattage of the front AND rear light bulb used. If necessary, try something out here which combination provides the best light output but does not tend to burn out at high speed. However, due to the possible high speeds that can be achieved, you are faced with the problem that correspondingly strong lamps that do not burn out at low speeds rather than glow.

Solution
If you want to be on the safe side, use a voltage regulator from the outset, such as BGM6690 (for 12 volts). As a result, despite a supposedly only 6-volt system, you have a nice bright light that does not burn out. If you also want to connect a brake light, you can use the brown cable. Here, however, Piaggio has also connected a resistor parallel to the light source to avoid an overvoltage.

Tip: Professionals can also connect all light coils in series (solder them on the ignition base plate) and then have a very high light output, which must be regulated by a voltage regulator. However, this also means that modifications with a high power consumption (electric water pump, large headlights, etc.) can easily be carried out.

Original Piaggio number of the ignition base plate: 219965
