Piston rings wear with mileage. If performance drops noticeably on an otherwise healthy engine, worn rings are often the cause. A clear sign is blow-by marks on the piston skirt below the rings (combustion residue caused by poor sealing). Installation and running-in notes

• On 2-stroke pistons, the ring ends must sit against the locating pins in the ring grooves – otherwise the ring can catch in a port and break.
• Do not overstretch the rings when fitting them; clean carbon deposits from the ring grooves beforehand.
• Lightly oil the rings and cylinder bore surface before assembly.
• If the cylinder bore surface coating is damaged, replacing the rings alone will not help.
• Airsal replacement rings only fit Airsal pistons or cylinders of the specified size.
• Use a new cylinder gasket set during installation.
• After working on the piston and cylinder, run the engine in gently: avoid full load during the first kilometres, vary the engine speed and do not let the engine overheat. Afterwards, check the spark plug colour and carburettor settings.
