Standard fittings with M10 mounts do not directly accept accessory mirrors with an M8 shaft. The adapter bridges the difference and thus expands the selection of mountable mirrors without the need to drill or re-thread the fitting. Unlike a round lock nut, the square nut can be securely gripped with a wrench.
