The intake manifold is the inlet channel through which the air-fuel mixture reaches the engine via the reed valve. How well your engine "breathes" depends heavily on the volumetric efficiency – that is, how much mixture actually enters the combustion chamber in relation to the displacement. This is exactly where the manifold plays a central role: the mixture must be able to flow through the manifold with as few losses as possible.

To keep these losses low, large diameter jumps and acute angles in the flow path should be avoided. Additionally, the intake manifold acts as a kind of storage space for the freshly admitted mixture: when the reed valve closes, the mixture column "backs up" briefly in the manifold and presses against the reeds. Therefore, every manifold is tuned to a specific RPM range in which maximum performance is achieved (tuned manifold).

Besides the flow, the manifold has another important task: it serves as a mount for the carburetor by connecting it to the engine housing or the cylinder. Depending on the version, it can also help dampen vibrations that would otherwise be transmitted to the carburetor. This supports clean mixture preparation and can reduce the phenomenon of emulsion of air and gasoline in the carburetor bowl.
