ECE standards and DOT

ECE 22.05 and 22.06

These helmet standards shape the safety standard of motorcycle helmets. ECE Regulation 22, issued by the United Nations, defines the requirements that motorcycle helmets must meet in order to be approved for use in road traffic. The ECE 22.05 standard has been in force for almost two decades, but it is now being replaced by the reformed ECE 22.06 regulation. It has been possible to test helmets in accordance with this new standard since the beginning of 2021. Since June 2023, helmets with the ECE 22.05 standard have no longer been produced. In particular, the new ECE 22.06 is intended to make helmets and visors, as required for use on motorised two-wheelers, even safer. Since 22.05 is almost two decades old, the new 22.06 includes new requirements that did not exist a few years ago. In this way, the audit was adapted to technological change. Every new helmet from MT Helmets is approved with ECE 22.06.

DOT

Thanks to DOT certification, a helmet is also approved and tested in the USA. DOT stands for “Department of Transportation,” the US-American KBA. Helmets with ECE and DOT certification therefore have a double standard.

Helmet types

Full face helmet
